To be specific, it was the company’s goal to hit the billion-device milestone during a few years once the launch of the new OS. Giving free upgrades was Microsoft’s golden ticket to hit that range.

 

In other words, the free Windows 10 upgrades program always had an expiration date — and currently, Microsoft is ending the program without reservation. Microsoft officially stopped giving free Windows 10 upgrades back in July 2016. but included an exception for those who have needs requiring “assistive technologies.” The exception was for those who used accessories like Braille screens, screen readers, or magnifiers.
