The SpaceX rocket engine exploded during a test in Texas

News

SpaceX was testing a rocket engine on Sunday once it exploded, and currently, the aerospace company is trying to figure out what happened. The incident happened at a company site in Texas, and SpaceX reported no injuries and does not expect that the accident can affect its launch schedule.

The Merlin engine in question, that was intended for a Falcon 9 launch later next year, was undergoing a ‘qualification test’ once it exploded. Obviously, any kind of unexpected combustion is valued preventing, particularly for a corporation that has lost rockets (and the multimillion-dollar payloads they were carrying). better on a test bed than on a loaded launch vehicle, though, particularly while SpaceX has its best year ever with sixteen successful missions (double its total in 2016) — with 3 more Falcon 9 launches scheduled, according to The Washington Post.

It’s unclear if this issue is with a singular engine or with the Merlin propulsion system generally. The Falcon nine uses 9 of them in its 1st stage, while the Falcon heavy, that is scheduled to have its 1st launch this month, fields 27 in its 1st stage. For the record, Musk and company decide to use a new engine design, the Raptor, for its BFR launch vehicle headed to Mars.
