Google plan to software update for Pixel 2 clicking sound fix

News

Google says it’s prepping a software update to fix the faint clicking sounds some pixel 2 units have been emitting since the device and its XL variant landed in consumers’ hands starting last week.

“We are validating a software update to address faint clicking sounds on some pixel 2 devices. The update are made available in the coming weeks,” a community manager wrote on the pixel User Community forum this afternoon. “The clicking noise being reported doesn’t affect the performance of your device, but if you find it bothersome you can temporarily turn off NFC in Settings > Connected devices > NFC.”

Reports of strange sounds, including both clicking sounds and high-pitched noises, coming from the pixel 2 began surfacing late last week and began mounting over the weekend. Google eventually said it was investigating the issue.

With the pixel 2 XL’s apparent burn-in issue and complaints over the display’s color saturation, it’s shaping up to be a pretty bad month for Google’s consumer hardware team coming off the high of its successful phone launch earlier this month. Google is planning a series of separate software updates to address the pixel 2 XL’s screen problems.
